Valentine’s STEM Fun Using What You Already Have ❤️

The Conscious Classroom

Simple, sustainable STEM ideas that reduce waste, spark curiosity, and inspire young minds.

Hi Reader,

Valentine’s Day is almost here — and while I love a festive moment, I also love finding ways to make holidays meaningful, low-waste, and hands-on for kids.

That’s exactly why I created the Valentine’s Day STEM Block Challenge — a 21-page printable activity that uses interlocking blocks you likely already have at home or in your classroom to teach real math and design skills.

No special kits required. No new plastic purchases needed.

Students will:

  • Build Valentine shapes like hearts, envelopes, and the word LOVE
  • Draw their designs on grid paper
  • Calculate area using square centimeters (each block = 2 cm²)

One of my favorite parts? This activity encourages reuse and sharing. If you don’t already have interlocking blocks, this is a great opportunity to:

  • Borrow from a classroom or school library
  • Check your local library’s toy lending programs
  • Pick up a gently-used set from a thrift shop or secondhand store

It’s STEM learning that’s creative, affordable, and sustainability-minded — exactly what Thoughtfully Sustainable is all about.

✨ The full 21-page workbook is available now for just $5 and includes teacher and parent guides, student worksheets, answer keys, example builds, and reflection questions.

P.S. If you’re having trouble finding interlocking blocks, I originally picked mine up from the dollar section at Target — not a promo, just a helpful tip 😉. You can also find them here, but they’re more expensive.
